In John 6:35, Christ tells us "I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." So we seek to share the Good News of Christ to all who hunger and thirst spiritually. In Matthew 25:31-46, Christ tells a parable about the importance of reaching out in His name to those who are physically hungry, thirsty, in need of companionship or clothing. He tells us, "...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
So we reach out to the least, the last, and the lost in our local community, across the nation, and around the world in the following ways:
Ghent Area Ministry (GAM)- GAM is a local faith-agency serving those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Each year, we collect Thanksgiving baskets that provide a complete holiday feast to a local family in need. In 2017, we partnered with GUMP to assemble 16 Thanksgiving baskets for donations to GAM.
NEST- Each winter we co-host with our neighbor Ohef Sholom Temple a week of shelter and meals for the homeless.
Rise Against Hunger (formerly known as Stop Hunger Now) - Through this international hunger relief non-profit organization, we participate in an annual meal packaging event. The organization distributes these packages and other aid to people across the globe. People of all ages--from 2 to 92--can participate in this meaningful and fun mission activity!
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Relief Kits - UMCOR collects hygiene, school, and cleaning kits for distribution within the United States. Kits help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies when a disaster strikes. Each spring we assemble relief kits to help provide care for the most vulnerable people during times of crisis.
Used Book Sale during Fall and Spring Stockley Gardens Arts Festivals - Our fall and spring used book sale and parking lot fundraiser serve to provide outreach to the community and to help raise funds for our Vacation Bible School, as well as our other ministries for children and youth.
Old Prescription Eyeglasses Collection Donate glasses and change someone's life by helping a child to read, an adult to succeed in his job, or a senior maintain her independence. Please place your donations in the collection box in the sanctuary lobby. We give donated eyeglasses to a local Lions Club for distribution.
Wesley Community Service Center: On the fourth Sunday of each month, we collect non-perishable food items for donation to WCSC, a Portsmouth human services agency affiliated with United Methodist Women. WCSC provides supplemental groceries and emergency food boxes to local families living with hunger and food insecurity.
