Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST)
The Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST) is a volunteer coalition of churches, synagogues, and community groups who offer emergency shelter to the homeless during the winter months. Volunteers are needed to sign guests in, prepare and serve the evening meal and breakfast, and take overnight shifts staying at the host church. Volunteers have an opportunity not only to serve, but also to gain insight into the experience of homelessness.
Once again this year, Ghent Church will partner our neighbor, Ohef Sholom, to host the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST) on for the week of December 12-18 at Ohef Sholom Temple. Ghent UMC is responsible for providing meals and monitoring for the homeless on Friday to Saturday, December 14-15.
We will need volunteers to help with check-in, meal preparation (dinner and breakfast), and especially with the overnight monitor positions. Please stay tuned for the Sign-up Genius link, which will be available soon.
